Teatro Serpente Aureo

The Teatro Serpente Aureo, located in the Palazzo Comunale of Offida, has origins dating back to 1768, when it was decided to replace a primitive stage in the council chamber with a wooden theatre with 29 boxes on three tiers, financed by private individuals. Completed in 1771, it soon proved unsuitable for the growing demands of citizenship. In 1820, based on a design by architect Pietro Maggi, construction began on a new theatre in the north courtyard of the palace, completed in 1862 in an elegant Baroque style. The interior boasts 50 boxes, gold decorations on a green background and a vault painted by Alcide Allevi with Apollo and the Muses. Enriched by a historic curtain depicting the legendary Golden Snake, it underwent various structural modifications in the twentieth century, such as the introduction of electric lighting and consolidation work. Restored between 1991 and 2002, it now hosts cultural events and traditional celebrations.
