Teatro Comunale Giacomo Leopardi

In the late nineteenth century, the new Palazzo Municipale of San Ginesio replaced the old Palazzo Defensorale, a symbol of the temporal and spiritual power of the city. The construction was decided on May 10, 1863 and entrusted to the engineer Girolamo Filippucci, who moved the building back to expand the square. In 1874, the City Council decided to build a theater on the second floor, entrusting the project to engineer Dionisio Frapiccini and the decoration to Pietro Giovanetti. Meanwhile, the Circolo Cittadino “Aristide Morichelli” was born on the lower floor, decorated by Guglielmo Ciarlantini. The theatre, inaugurated on 18 August 1877 with the opera Le nozze in Pasquella, took the name of Teatro Comunale in 1877, while it was named after Giacomo Leopardi in 1903.
