Teatro Comunale (“Teatro Flora”)

The Teatro Comunale of Penna San Giovanni, also known as the Flora Municipal Theatre, was built around 1780 in the Palazzo dei Priori and is an example of a Baroque theatre made of wood. It was designed by the local painter Antonio Liozzi, who took care of both the structure and the pictorial decorations, characterised by floral motifs and trompe-l'œil. The theatre was born thanks to a theatre condominium, a system that led to the creation of numerous theatres in the Marche region between the 17th and 19th centuries. After years of neglect, the theatre was restored from 1974 to 1993. Although always referred to as "municipal" or "public," in 1993 the name "Flora" was coined by the then mayor in honor of a troupe of acrobats who performed in the theater after the Second World War.
