Teatro Lauro Rossi

The Teatro Lauro Rossi in Macerata, designed by Antonio Galli, known as "Bibbiena", and completed by Cosimo Morelli, was built in 1765 on the initiative of forty-six local nobles, the "Nobili Condomini". As early as 1492 there was a “Sala della Commedia” in the town hall, replaced in 1663 by a theatre designed by Cornelio Felici and Giulio Lazzarini. In 1772, the new building was completed and inaugurated in 1774 with "Olimpiade" by Pasquale Anfossi. After various restorations, including the radical one in 1867 to improve visibility and acoustics, the theatre was sold to the Municipality and dedicated in 1884 to Lauro Rossi, a famous composer from Macerata. Between 1984 and 1989, a restoration brought the building back to its eighteenth-century appearance, recovering the polychrome stucco and original decorations.
