Teatro Comunale

The Teatro Comunale di Cagli, built between 1871 and 1876 on the site of the previous Teatro delle Muse, is the work of architect Giovanni Santini and his colleague Coriolano Monti. Inaugurated in 1878 with the opera Il Violino del Diavolo by Agostino Mercuri, it features original sets by Girolamo Magnani, Verdi's favorite. After a long restoration, it reopened in 1999 as an artistic hub for short creative residencies. The neoclassical façade harmonizes with the historic center, while the interior is adorned with decorations by Alessandro Venanzi: the large blue vault depicts the seven liberal arts, and the balconies of the boxes feature symbols such as the Swan, the Sphinx, and Pegasus. The curtain, restored in 2002, portrays Frederick Barbarossa during the siege of Cagli.
