Teatro della Rocca

The Teatro di Sassocorvaro is located inside the Rocca, which was built around 1475 by Francesco di Giorgio Martini for Federico da Montefeltro. The theater was created within the main hall of the stronghold, a space that was once designated as the quarters of the fortress commander.
Following the cessation of the military function of the fortress, the hall naturally transitioned into a theater; however, it was only after 1860, when the fortress was acquired by the municipality, that the theater became public. Its structure is unique, as it does not possess traditional boxes, but rather a single, large wooden gallery with a balustrade.
The vault of the hall, painted in 1895 by the painter Enrico Mancini, features late-Neoclassical scenes with cherubs (putti) and landscapes. Mancini also decorated the balustrade and the stage curtain, which depicts a view of Sassocorvaro. Regrettably, the decorations on the lower walls have been lost.
