Teatro Comunale Tullio Giacconi

The theatre, inaugurated in 1858 after four years of work on the land of the ancient city abbey, features a design not attributable with certainty to Cesare Boccalini. Modified in 1935 to become a cinematographer, the names of set designers and decorators remain unknown. The stalls, with a wooden floor like the stage, could be raised for dancing events, flanked by three tiers of brick boxes. The concave ceiling, suspended by tie rods, plastered and decorated, expresses a nineteenth-century eclecticism, enriched by an up-and-down chandelier. Damaged by bombing in 1944, it was restored in 1950 with a façade in twentieth-century Piacenza style. The richly decorated vault includes mythological scenes such as "Leda with the Swan" and "Selene with Endymion", contrasting with the sober parapets. Decorative restorations, completed in June 1997, restored the theatre to its former glory for its reopening on 25 October 1997.
